          How Continuing Education Helps Us  Support Our Clients

          At our studio, continuing education is a core part of our philosophy. Pilates is an ever-evolving practice rooted in movement, biomechanics, anatomy, and the unique needs of each body in front of us. The more we learn, the better we teach.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Ongoing education keeps our instructors informed, thoughtful, and relevant. It allows us to move beyond memorized exercises and better understand why we choose certain movements, how to adapt them, and how to support clients through different seasons of life. For us, continued learning is not about collecting certifications — it is about becoming better teachers.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

          We are excited to share that our very own Martina Shinko recently completed the Fusion Pilates Pre &amp;amp; Postnatal Specialist Training with internationally recognized educator Jennifer Gianni.  This training was far more than a course on what exercises to avoid during pregnancy. Instead, it was an intensive, science-backed dive into how movement can support women through pregnancy, labor preparation, postpartum recovery, and long-term pelvic floor and core health.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Moving Beyond “Modifications”
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Prenatal Pilates is often reduced to a list of restrictions or limitations. This training completely shifts that perspective.  Rather than simply modifying traditional exercises to make them “safe,” Martina learned how to approach movement through a functional, four-trimester lens — designing proactive programming that helps prepare the body for the physical demands of pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum healing.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          The focus becomes building resilience, stability, breath awareness, deep core function, and confidence throughout every phase of movement.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Understanding the Pelvic Floor More Deeply
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          One of the most impactful parts of the training focused on pelvic floor function.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          We often hear that a “strong” pelvic floor means tighter muscles, but true pelvic floor health requires both strength and the ability to release and respond dynamically with breath and movement.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          The training included:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Managing intra-abdominal pressure
          &#xD;

           Integrating the pelvic floor with the breath
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Supporting deep core function
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Release techniques for the hips, psoas, diaphragm, and spine
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Strategies to help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts and chronic tension patterns
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

          These concepts are beneficial not only for prenatal and postpartum clients, but also for many clients experiencing hip discomfort, instability, low back tension, postural changes, or core dysfunction.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Specialized Postpartum Recovery Support
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          The postpartum portion of the training focused heavily on healing, restoration, and long-term function.  Martina is now equipped with movement protocols to support:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

          What This Means for Our Studio Community
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

          Whether someone is:

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           trying to conceive,

          Martina will be integrating this research and training directly into her teaching approach on both the reformer and mat — helping clients build resilient core strength, improve movement mechanics, better understand pelvic floor function, and develop a deeper connection to their bodies.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          This training also reinforces something we strongly believe:

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Movement should support the body through every season of life — not limit it.

          We are excited for Martina to bring this knowledge into the studio and continue expanding the ways we support our community through intelligent, intentional movement.

          There is a reason I believe movement is medicine.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

          Not because movement “fixes” everything. Not because Pilates is a replacement for medical care. But because the body is designed to move, adapt, communicate, and reconnect. And when we train the body in a way that asks the brain, nervous system, muscles, joints, fascia, and breath to work together, something much deeper happens than just “exercise.”
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          That is exactly why I use the Konnector.
         &#xD;

          What Is the Konnector?

          The Konnector is a patented single-rope, four-strap pulley system added to the Pilates reformer. Instead of each arm or leg working separately in a traditional way, the Konnector connects all four limbs through one continuous rope system. That means your arms, legs, core, spine, and nervous system are constantly communicating with each other.

          Why Proprioception Matters
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Proprioception is your body’s ability to know where it is in space. It is how you know where your foot is without looking at it. It is how you catch yourself when you trip. It is how your body organizes balance, coordination, control, and reaction.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          As we age, proprioception naturally declines. Research links this decline with changes in joint mechanics, neuromuscular control, balance, and fall risk. 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           And this matters.
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

          A lot.

          According to the CDC, more than one in four adults age 65 and older falls each year, and falling once doubles the chance of falling again. Falls also lead to millions of emergency room visits and about one million fall-related hospitalizations each year.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          So when we talk about balance, coordination, and body awareness, we are not talking about cute fitness extras.  We are talking about independence. Confidence. Longevity. The ability to move through life without fear.
         &#xD;

          Why the Konnector Feels So Different
         &#xD;

          On a traditional reformer, you can sometimes isolate movement. One part works while another part stays quiet.  The Konnector does not let you get away with that.

           That is not a bad thing.

          That is information.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

          The Konnector shows us where the body is compensating, where it is disconnected, and where the nervous system needs more clarity. Balanced Body notes that the Konnector enhances proprioception, illuminates imbalances, and helps clients feel, understand, and correct those imbalances with less cueing.

          Research has shown that mind-body exercise can support cognitive function in older adults, including areas like executive function, memory, learning, and cognitive flexibility. One review found mind-body exercise may be a safe and effective way to enhance cognitive function in adults over 60. 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Another review found that mind-body exercise has moderate positive effects on cognitive function in adults 55 and older and may be especially valuable when practiced consistently over time.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          This is the part I wish more people understood:

          When movement requires attention, coordination, balance, rhythm, control, and problem-solving, you are not just “working out.”  You are training your brain-body connection.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          The Konnector demands presence. You cannot completely check out. You have to feel. You have to adjust. You have to listen.

          One of the most beautiful things about the Konnector is that it is not only for advanced clients.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          At this studio, I work with clients from teenagers to clients in their 80s. I teach people with hip replacements, knee replacements, neck issues, balance concerns, neurological challenges, and spinal cord injuries.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

          And no, every person does not do the same thing.  That is the point.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

          The Konnector gives us options. It gives feedback. It allows us to meet the body where it is while still asking it to connect, respond, and organize.
         &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

          For one client, that might mean rebuilding confidence after surgery.  For another, it might mean improving gait, balance, or coordination.  For another, it might mean learning how to use the core without gripping the neck or overusing the hip flexors.  For another, it might mean finally feeling the difference between moving harder and moving better.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

          The Konnector helps make those connections visible and feelable.

          Traditional resistance training (like weightlifting) has strong evidence tied to reduced mortality risk, with even ~60 minutes per week showing benefits.  But Pilates holds its own in a different way.
         &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Research comparing Pilates to other exercise methods found it can produce

          Some moments in your career feel almost surreal — moments where you pause, look around the room, and realize something truly special is happening.

      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           ﻿
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Hosting Viktor Uygan, creator of The Konnect Method™, at Pilates By Tammie was one of those moments for me.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          In total, I had the opportunity to spend three days with Viktor while he was here leading a two-day Konnect Method™ teacher training in our Rehoboth Beach studio. Having someone of Viktor’s caliber teaching inside our space was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — humbling, inspiring, and honestly a little surreal.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Over those three days, I gained an even deeper appreciation not only for Viktor’s knowledge and creativity, but also for the person he is. Spending time with him reinforced just how fortunate the Pilates community is to have someone like Viktor contributing to this industry and continuing to evolve the way we think about movement.

          A Special Addition to the Training

          Another highlight of the training was having one of our own studio clients participate.

          While she is not a Pilates instructor, she chose to attend the training simply to deepen her personal Pilates practice and better understand the movement system she experiences in class. Her curiosity and enthusiasm were a wonderful reminder that Pilates attracts people who truly want to learn and understand their bodies.

           He will be training our instructors — along with teachers from surrounding areas —
